Watch Sweet Ride USA Episode 4

In Episode 4, we hosted our first PublicRide – anyone was welcome to join Sweet Ride USA as we trekked from Silverlake, Los Angeles to a customize-your-own donut shop in Highland Park called Donut Friend. This place is amazing – you can choose the type of donut cake you want, then go crazy with fillings and toppings, including cheese, coconut bacon, lime zest and Sriraccha sauce.

Our guest leader for the ride was Rick Johnson from LA bike crew Treats N’ Beats who filled us in on his least favorite part of biking in LA – Prius drivers.

After we stuffed our faces, the group split off to check out the SoCalCross Turkey Trot Cyclocross races in lovely Verdugo Park. Don “Roadblock” Ward from Wolfpack Hustle and his girlfriend Kathryn led us back to Hollywood on their giant tandem bike.

Everyone on the ride was welcome to take pics and videos, post online with #srusapublicride, and we added the best stuff to this episode. Thanks everybody for the contributions!

It was a fantastic day, and only the first of our PublicRides. If you’d like to come ride with us, join our mailing list or follow us on the socials.

Damian Kevitt & Finish the Ride (Full Interview)

On a winter day in Los Angeles, cyclist Damian Kevitt was run down by a hit and run driver which resulted in the amputation of his right leg. He’s back on the bike and has turned this tragic event into a movement to battle the hit and run epidemic called Finish the Ride. I spoke with Damian near the site of the incident and learned his amazing story.

Here is the full version of our interview.

Mudfoot’s “The Dirty Hundo” Video

On March 29th, Mudfoot and Golden Saddle Cyclery hosted The Dirty Hundo – a 90 mile, 9k elevation (35 miles of it dirt) cyclocross bike ride in the Los Angeles mountains for the stout of heart and the thick of tire. I wussed out, largely because I didn’t think I had the right bike for it. That is, until I found out that GSC’s Kyle Kelley did it on his All-City Space Horse AND with flat pedals, making me feel like even more of a pansy.

I’ve since remedied my bike “issue” and am definitely going next year.

Some good rides coming up this weekend, and it’s going to be stupid beautiful out. Go ride your bike!

The Pie Ride, Volume 1

Now THIS is a ride we can get behind – a tour of pie places starting in Echo Park and going who knows where. I hear a stop in historic Philippineotown is on the agenda. Passage Ride regular John Kerr is leading, and this looks to be a fun one. Meetup: 10:30am Vista Hermosa Park.

The Soto Ride

A ride to Santa Ana to visit #BikeLA figure Albert Soto, to support him in his battle against cancer. Meetup: 11:00am, La Placita Olvera – La Golondrinas – across from Union Station.

Treats N’ Beats

Looks like super fun party ride TNB is gonna do their 3rd weekend of the month ride this Sunday afternoon. The plan is to make the most of the 85 degree weather and head west. Meetup: 1pm at Mornings Nights coffee in the Sunset Triangle.

Watch Sweet Ride USA Episode 3

In Episode 3, Andrea “MamaB” Denike Martinez, Nat Gale, York Tan, Bruce Chan, Nona Varnado and I braved the mid-90 degree heat in Los Angeles on a bike ride to try out two delicious desserts. First, the bicycle-churned ice cream at Peddler’s Creamery downtown, then DK Donuts‘ take on the cronut, the “Double Decker O-Nut” in Santa Monica. As always, we rode a route through the city designed to burn off every calorie we’d consume.

Bruce and Nona are the founders of LA Bike Trains, an organization created as a way for cyclists to commute in a fun and safe way to work in the morning. It’s a pretty rad setup, and if you are in LA and wanna try out bike commuting, this is a great way to start.

Along the way we checked out the mysterious “Witch’s House” in Beverly Hills and stopped at Orange 20 Bikes for some gear.

This episode’s On-Bike Interview features Sean Bonner, dedicated LA cyclist and one of the founders of Safecast, a groundbreaking volunteer group that sprang into action after the Fukushima disaster in Japan, creating a crowdsourced radioactivity monitoring solution. It shows you the power of what people can do when they put their heads together for a greater purpose.

After Sean rhapsodized about the excitement of night rides in the early days of Midnight Ridazz, we geeked out over his sweet black Golden Saddle Cyclery-built Freeman single speed bike that’s easily collapsable so he can pack that bad boy onto a plane.

Wanna ride the this route yourself and have your own Sweet Ride? Here ya go.

In EP3, we were shadowed by Bicycling Magazine for a spread in their March issue. Go buy it on newsstands now!

Chrome_20 Uphill Sprints Fixed Gear Bike Race

Chrome Industries has been hosting a bunch of cool events to celebrate their Los Angeles holiday pop up hub. The shop is next door to Orange20 bikes, and Edson Palucha, who works at o20, hosted this race last week as part of his FOOseries. It was all uphill fixed gear brakeless sprints in Elysian Park. I couldn’t make it out (I was busy gearing up for a holiday caroling ride that night), but it looked like a lot of fun.

The Winners:
1st: Anthony Zelaya
2nd: Edgar “Willo” Juarez
3rd: Raul “Nokx” Rodriguez
