Watch Sweet Ride USA Episode 4

In Episode 4, we hosted our first PublicRide – anyone was welcome to join Sweet Ride USA as we trekked from Silverlake, Los Angeles to a customize-your-own donut shop in Highland Park called Donut Friend. This place is amazing – you can choose the type of donut cake you want, then go crazy with fillings and toppings, including cheese, coconut bacon, lime zest and Sriraccha sauce.

Our guest leader for the ride was Rick Johnson from LA bike crew Treats N’ Beats who filled us in on his least favorite part of biking in LA – Prius drivers.

After we stuffed our faces, the group split off to check out the SoCalCross Turkey Trot Cyclocross races in lovely Verdugo Park. Don “Roadblock” Ward from Wolfpack Hustle and his girlfriend Kathryn led us back to Hollywood on their giant tandem bike.

Everyone on the ride was welcome to take pics and videos, post online with #srusapublicride, and we added the best stuff to this episode. Thanks everybody for the contributions!

It was a fantastic day, and only the first of our PublicRides. If you’d like to come ride with us, join our mailing list or follow us on the socials.

Damian Kevitt & Finish the Ride (Full Interview)

On a winter day in Los Angeles, cyclist Damian Kevitt was run down by a hit and run driver which resulted in the amputation of his right leg. He’s back on the bike and has turned this tragic event into a movement to battle the hit and run epidemic called Finish the Ride. I spoke with Damian near the site of the incident and learned his amazing story.

Here is the full version of our interview.

Cronuts in LA

Celebrity chef Dominique Ansel brought his hit pastry the “Cronut” to LA for one day only. April and I braved the line to see what the all the hype was about. This involved rain, a three hour wait and the seedy underbelly of the Cronut black market.

Watch Sweet Ride USA Episode 3

In Episode 3, Andrea “MamaB” Denike Martinez, Nat Gale, York Tan, Bruce Chan, Nona Varnado and I braved the mid-90 degree heat in Los Angeles on a bike ride to try out two delicious desserts. First, the bicycle-churned ice cream at Peddler’s Creamery downtown, then DK Donuts‘ take on the cronut, the “Double Decker O-Nut” in Santa Monica. As always, we rode a route through the city designed to burn off every calorie we’d consume.

Bruce and Nona are the founders of LA Bike Trains, an organization created as a way for cyclists to commute in a fun and safe way to work in the morning. It’s a pretty rad setup, and if you are in LA and wanna try out bike commuting, this is a great way to start.

Along the way we checked out the mysterious “Witch’s House” in Beverly Hills and stopped at Orange 20 Bikes for some gear.

This episode’s On-Bike Interview features Sean Bonner, dedicated LA cyclist and one of the founders of Safecast, a groundbreaking volunteer group that sprang into action after the Fukushima disaster in Japan, creating a crowdsourced radioactivity monitoring solution. It shows you the power of what people can do when they put their heads together for a greater purpose.

After Sean rhapsodized about the excitement of night rides in the early days of Midnight Ridazz, we geeked out over his sweet black Golden Saddle Cyclery-built Freeman single speed bike that’s easily collapsable so he can pack that bad boy onto a plane.

Wanna ride the this route yourself and have your own Sweet Ride? Here ya go.

In EP3, we were shadowed by Bicycling Magazine for a spread in their March issue. Go buy it on newsstands now!

My New Chrome Barrage Cargo Filled with Holiday Stuff

The allure of the Chrome_20 holiday pop-up hub proved too strong for me, and I grabbed some stuff including the Barrage Cargo backpack. Been using it everyday, and so far have been really happy with it. Planning on doing a full video review, but now here’s a little video of me unpacking all kinds of holiday mess before last week’s Echo Park Bike Posse annual caroling ride. This thing is really sturdy, comfortable, and it holds a ton. Barrage Cargo Packpack at Chrome Industries

Watch Sweet Ride USA Episode 2

Episode 2 of our web series about riding bikes and eating desserts takes place in Los Angeles, the day before the Wolfpack Hustle‘s Marathon Crash Race – where thousands of cyclists crash the LA Marathon course in the twilight hours, before the runners take over the route. True, it’s not the best idea loading up on sweets on the day before a race, but Andrea “Mama B” Denike Martinez, Nat Gale, York Tan, Lawrence Sanchez and Katie Brooks Bennett said screw it and came on the Sweet Ride anyway.

Sweet Ride USA Theme Song

Here’s the whole theme song uploaded to YouTube. Wrote this trying to capture the feeling of rolling around the city with your friends on a group ride. Many thanks to Rick Boston for recording, playing keyboards and bass and my old buddy Chris Cano (and former Skycycle drummer) for laying down a meaty drum track.

Watch Sweet Ride USA Episode 1

In our first episode, shot in Los Angeles, Andrea “Mama B” Denike Martinez, Steven Lau, Nat Gale, York Tan and Kate Fields joined me in the quest to seek out two great desserts, explore the city, and burn off all the calories by the end of the ride.

After checking in with our resident dessert expert, Erika, for an idea of what we’d have to burn on the ride, we rode from Silverlake to The Pub at Golden Road Brewing to check out their croissant bread pudding. After Nat’s psychedelic wardrobe change, we headed down along the LA river path to the Nickel Diner in Downtown LA to sample their famous bacon donut. Along the way we did a mini-tour of locations from the sci-fi classic Blade Runner, and did an on-bike interview with Nat who works in the LA Mayor’s Office of Transportation to get the inside scoop about the battle to transform LA into a bike-friendly city. Not an easy task, but it’s one worth fighting for.
